The Pittsburgh Rose Society is happy
to acknowledge our long serving
Newsletter Editor on the occasion of
his 50th. Anniversary as a priest and
55 years in the Capuchin Franciscan
Order.
Father Gervase was the fourth child of Martin and Pauline Leiker
Degenhardt, born Francis Joseph Degenhardt  on December 28, 1931 in
rural Kansas.  He spent his childhood in the town of Hays, KS, and at the
age of 13 moved to Herman, PA, to attend St. Fidelis High School and follow
his calling to become a Capuchin Friar.

He has pursued this love of roses, and botany in general, in many ways.  To
mention only a few directly associated with us, Father has been a
Consulting Rosarian since 1987,  certified ARS judge since 1988,and a
Master Rosarian since 2005.  He has served the Penn-Jersey District in
many capacities, the most notable being the District's official Chaplin.

Father has edited the Pittsburgh Rose Society Newsletter for over 20 years
and has written extensively on the cultivation of roses.  He serves the
Society as a member of the Board of Directors, a show judge, and trusted
and valued mentor to all our members.

Congratulations Father Gervase and we wish you many more happy years
as a Priest and a member of our Society.
