THE THEME OF THE MONTH:
"
Slow down, don't move so fast"
Fall ( October-November)
If you are new at growing roses and need advice, call one of
the Consulting Rosarians
(follow this link for the list) in your
area.

WATER:  Western Pa has been getting plenty of rain this fall
so it is unlikely that you will need to give your bushes extra
water.  But keep an eye on the weather.  If we should get a dry
winter you may need to water later in early spring.

Fertilization:   Stop fertilization.  You want your roses to slow
down and steady themselves for winter

Spraying:  Clean up fallen rose bush leaves and discard.
This reduces the number of fungus spores that will splash up
upon the leaves during rain or watering.  If you are troubled
with Black Spot or other fungal diseases, a good garden
center can advise you as to the best spray to apply (or call
one of our Consulting Rosarians.)

Winterizing:

It is best to wait till the ground freezes.  Remember the goal of
winterizing is to prevent heaving of the ground during freeze
and thaw cycles.  It is a good idea to start collecting the
material you plan to use (wood chip mulch is best and avoid
ground leaves --except Oak--)  Mound this material around
your less hardy bushes.  If you have not buried the bud union
of a grafted rose 1"-2" below the ground be sure to mound the
bush with dirt then mulch.  Otherwise the bud union will freeze
and you will no longer be growing the rose you wanted but the
root stock it was graphed upon.

Pruning: You may do a rough pruning if the canes are long
and whip in the wind.
Remember the time to do serious
pruning is in the early spring, not now.

Plan for next year:    Now is the time to make a garden plan
marking where your roses are so in the spring, when those
short loose tags disappear you will still know what bush you
are growing.  Also start looking on-line for nurseries that have
roses you might want to add to your collection.
