THE THEME OF THE MONTH: "WINTER IS HERE"
If you are new at growing roses and need advice, call
one of the Consulting Rosarians (follow this link for
the list) in your area.
Keep planning for the future. We will soon have the
New Roses for 2010 on our site but for a preview, but
until then, you can reference the new roses in the
Sept/Oct 2009 American Rose. You can see some
the older introductions of roses for 2009 at our "New
Introductions for 2009" page. If you are really
looking for tested rose, check the name in the
"Handbook for Selecting roses" from the ARS. Our
next event will be the February Luncheon. For more
information go to "Next Event Page".
Spraying: The next spraying needed will be when
the roses come out of dormancy. Although some
rosarians will spray their bushes with an
anti-dessicant, (anti-transpirant) such as WiltPruf to
help reduce winter kill from dehydration of the stems.
Water: As the winter goes on pay attention to the
amount of rain/snow fall. If we get way below the
usual amount your roses may begin to suffer and
require some supplemental watering during brief
warming spells. .
Going Green? If you are trying to reduce the use of
harsh chemicals you must practice good garden
hygiene, use preventive applications of
biodegradable sprays and select rose bushes that
have natural disease resistance. The spring issues
of our Newsletter featured articles on these topics. .
Winterizing:
Father Gervase has a good review of winterizing in
this month's newsletter. You should not be doing too
much protection till closer to the end of the month.
The goal is to protect the bud union of grafted roses
and to keep other roses from heaving during thaw
cycles. The best material is dirt, hardwood bark
mulch or ground oak leaves. Avoid other leaves
because they tend to breed fungus. Mound whatever
material you choose 3"-6" over the base of the bush.
Pruning should wait till spring unless the wind is
rocking the bush. Then it is quite OK to prune back
up to 1/3 of the rose.

we will mail it to you eleven times a year.

WHAT TO DO IN DECEMBER
These items are condensed from the advice given by our
Newsletter editor, Fr. Gervase Degenhardt. For more
detailed information see our most recent Newsletter.
DEER PROBLEM?
If you have a deer problem, then you will need to spray repellent as during the summer or get a longer acting, spreadable product, like Deer Scam that they deer shy away from. Most of our members us a product called Liquid Fences available at most garden and home supply stores.
